Critics' Concensus

Overview

One of the top daily trainers of 2025, the New Balance FuelCell Rebel v5 is a light, versatile daily trainer that improves on the fit and feel of the v4. Rebel v5 keeps a soft FuelCell ride, adds a touch of stack, tightens the upper/heel hold, and brings back a broad single-piece forefoot rubber to better contain the foam.

The Ride

Soft and lively without feeling mushy. Smooth rocker, easy transitions, and enough snap to handle strides, tempo, and shorter races—yet it’s calm and comfortable at easy paces. Not a trampoline “super shoe” pop; think springy and stable for an unplated trainer. Some runners may feel a touch of wobble on sharp corners or uneven paths given the softness.

Fit & Feel

True to size with a much more secure midfoot/heel and a comfortable, generously shaped toe box (much improved over the v4). The mesh upper, padded/gusseted tongue, and more structured heel collar deliver a dialed-in lock-down while staying breathable.

✓ Pros

  • Legitimate "rotation killer": can handle everything from easy runs to faster workouts
  • Noticeably improved upper/heel lockdown vs v4; comfortable, breathable, secure
  • Soft, smooth, springy ride without a plate; forefoot rubber containment keeps it from feeling mushy
  • Good value in this category

✗ Cons

  • Does not reach the level of "pop" as some plated or super trainers
  • Can feel a bit unstable on tight turns/uneven surfaces due to the softness of the foam; heavier runners or heavy heel strikers may compress it more
  • Durability questions after reports of Rebel v4s feeling "flat" sooner than expected

Bottom Line

Best for: Runners who want a light, fun, soft-springy trainer that’s capable at a variety of paces; runners who want a minimal shoe rotation and need a daily trainer that can do it all

Consider alternatives if: You are looking for a shoe with maximum pop for your workouts; you need rock-solid stability out of your daily trainer
